They have already released APS-C Z-mount AF lenses, so when will they release full frame Z-mount lenses ? Any one got some info about release date ?
tbh i have been looking into the technical side of this and it seems sigma is still navigating the licensing hurdles for full frame protocols. nikon is pretty protective of their mount data compared to sony. i would suggest being cautious before jumping ship to another system tho... native glass is likely coming.
- make sure to verify firmware compatibility if you use the Nikon FTZ II Mount Adapter with older hsm glass.
- be careful with the older Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art as it might not be as snappy as a native dn version would be.
- i might want to consider holding out for the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art for Nikon Z because the optical design is much more optimized for mirrorless.
- honestly check if the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is on your radar because that will be the real game changer for most of us. just my two cents based on how they handled the crop lenses... they usually wait until the af is 100 percent perfect before shipping.
> They have already released APS-C Z-mount AF lenses, so when will they release full frame Z-mount lenses ? ^ This. Also, jumping in here because I've been obsessing over the flange distance and protocol translations for the Z-mount lately! Sigma is likely taking their time to get the stepping motors perfect for the Z-system's high-speed AF communication. If you're lookin for those sweet savings right now tho, you gotta check out the Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 II Z. It is an absolute beast for the money and the AF is shockingly snappy for a non-Nikon lens! I also love the Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD Nikon Z if you need reach without breaking the bank. It's fantastic how light it is. Honestly, Nikon opening up the mount to Tamron first was a huge move, and Sigma will definitely follow soon with their DG DN lineup once the licensing ink is dry. Can't wait for a native 35mm Art... itll be legendary!
Would love to know this too
Man I wish I found this thread sooner. Would have saved me so much hassle.
Regarding what #5 said about "Man I wish I found this thread sooner...." - honestly, it saves a lot of frustration. The group here nailed the technical bottlenecks. Over the years, I've tried many ways to get third-party glass to behave like native stuff, even going so far as to probe the communication pins on my own gear to see why the AF was lagging. In my experience, Nikon's Z protocol is just way more talkative than the old DSLR days. I spent weeks trying to DIY a fix for the focus breathing on my favorite older prime while using the Nikon FTZ II Mount Adapter, thinking I could just trick the body, but the signal timing is just too precise. I learned that without that official license, you're always gonna have these micro-stutters. My current setup works way better now that I've stopped fighting the hardware and just stuck to what actually communicates properly. It's worth waiting for Sigma to do it right rather than dealing with the headache I went through tho... trust me.
Maybe later this year, Tamron already has some Z-mount full frame lenses.
