Ive been shooting with my trusty D850 for years and have always relied on my 50mm prime, but Ive suddenly started picking up more high-end studio portrait gigs and the clients are really noticing the distortion. Im starting to panic a bit because I have a wedding shoot in three weeks and need something sharper with better compression for headshots. My budget is around 1500 bucks, maybe a little more if I sell off some old glass. Should I go for the classic 85mm f/1.4G or is the 105mm f/1.4E worth the extra cash for the rendering? Im honestly stressing out about the bokeh transition and making the right choice before the deadline.

Honestly, ditch the 50mm for studio work if you are hitting distortion issues. If you want that professional edge for your upcoming wedding, you absolutely need the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED. I have used this lens extensively on my D850 and the rendering is just in another league compared to the 85mm. The compression is perfect for flattering facial features, and the bokeh transition is so buttery smooth it looks almost medium-format-like. Here is why you should pull the trigger on the 105mm:

  • Optical correction is vastly superior to the 85mm f/1.4G at wide apertures
  • The electromagnetic diaphragm provides incredibly consistent exposures during high-speed bursts
  • Sharpness is edge-to-edge even when shooting wide open at f/1.4 One quick tip: ensure you calibrate your AF fine-tune settings specifically for this lens at portrait distances because the depth of field is razor thin. Also, watch your shutter speeds. Since it is a heavy glass, a slight tremor shows up immediately at 105mm. Use a sturdy tripod or keep your shutter speed up to avoid any softness. You are going to absolutely love the files coming out of this setup!

To add to the point above: you really cant go wrong with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR. I know everyone is talking about primes, but for a wedding shoot, having that zoom range is honestly a total lifesaver! You get such beautiful compression at the 135mm or 200mm end, and the sharpness is just insane. It takes away all the stress of constantly swapping lenses when the bride is moving around. Yeah, it is a bit of an investment, but the versatility is worth every penny for a pro gig. Plus, the VR on this model is fantastic if you end up shooting in lower light during the reception. Just get it, you will absolutely love the professional look it gives your shots!

I spent years trying to push the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G but kept getting frustrated by the micro-contrast at wide apertures. The 85mm is fine, but the transition zones can feel a bit busy when youre shooting high-end studio work. I swapped to the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED a while back and never looked back. The optical formula is just tighter. Because you are on a D850, the 45.7MP sensor really exposes any softness or chromatic aberration, and the 105mm E-series handles that resolution like a champ. The field curvature is basically non-existent, so your focus plane stays razor thin even if the model moves slightly. If you really want to save some cash, check out the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art. Its heavy as a brick, but the sharpness is clinical. I actually rented one for a bridal editorial last summer and was really happy with the compression. It gives you that classic medium-format look which clients go crazy for. You honestly cant go wrong with either, but the Nikon E-series has better weather sealing for your upcoming wedding. Don't stress too much about the tech; just pick the one that balances better on your body.
