I've been staring at my screen for three hours and I'm honestly so annoyed right now because I just can't decide. I've got a wedding in upstate NY in three weeks and my current glass isn't cutting it for the D850 resolution.

I looked at the Nikon 85mm 1.4G but then I saw people saying the 105mm 1.4E is the only way to go for this high res sensor. Problem is that 105mm is way out of my $1200 budget and people say the 85mm is too slow for candid shots anyway. I just need something sharp that wont hunt while people are moving around. Is the 85mm 1.8G better or am I gonna regret not saving up more?

honestly i was in your shoes last year before a big wedding and i almost pulled the trigger on that expensive 105mm too. i ended up going with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G because i was tight on cash and i dont regret it one bit. you might want to consider that the d850 sensor is unforgiving but this lens actually holds its own. i used it for a whole reception and it didnt hunt nearly as much as my old glass. just be careful with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G because while the bokeh is pretty the focus speed is definitely sluggish for candids. if you can find a used Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Nikon F it fits your budget and is sharp as a tack but man its heavy. definitely make sure to check the weight before you commit to it tho.
