Honestly im just fed up with my current 24-70mm, its supposed to be a pro lens but the portraits im getting on my d850 look so flat and the background blur is just... messy. I bought this body for the resolution but my glass is holding me back and im losing my mind. I have a big outdoor family shoot in two weeks in Seattle and i need something that actually makes people pop.

  • budget is max $1100, ok with used
  • must be sharp at f1.8 or f1.4
  • need that creamy bokeh for headshots
  • dont want something too heavy like those sigma art bricks if possible

Which prime is actually worth the money for this sensor?

You absolutely need to grab the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G if you want that professional pop! Seriously, for the D850 sensor, this glass is basically magic. I know you said the Sigma Art is too heavy, and I totally agree... carrying that giant brick around Seattle for an outdoor family shoot sounds like a total nightmare tbh. The 85mm 1.4G is way lighter than the third-party stuff and the rendering is just incredible. Technical wise, this lens uses the Nano Crystal Coat which is amazing for maintaining contrast even when you have got some backlight. Since you are shooting on a 45.7MP body, you need a lens that handles the transition from focus to bokeh smoothly without looking nervous or messy. This one has a 9-blade rounded diaphragm that creates the creamiest background blur ever. Even wide open at f/1.4, the center sharpness is fantastic and it really lets that sensor breathe! If you want to save some money and get built-in stabilization, definitely look at the Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD. It is actually sharper than the Nikon 1.4G in some lab tests and the VC (vibration compensation) is a huge help on the D850 because that high-res sensor shows every tiny bit of camera shake. Both of these will completely kill that flat look you are getting from your zoom. You are gonna be so stoked with the photos from this shoot, honestly! Let me know if you want more specs on how they handle flare.
