Been shooting with my D750 for years but my 50mm feels way too tight for these crowded Tokyo streets I'm hitting next week. Im getting anxious cause I cant back up enough without walking into traffic. Should I just grab the 35mm f/1.8G or is 28mm better for street on a $300 budget?

Caught this today. In my experience, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED is safer. For something wider, maybe look at a used Nikon AF Nikkor 28mm f/2.8D too.

Honestly, I grabbed the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED for a trip once and it was such a disappointment. The plastic build felt flimsy and unfortunately, the focus hunting in low light was just not reliable enough. For Tokyo, you really need the wider field of view. Id go with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G instead. Its much safer for tight alleys where you cant back up.

honestly, most cheap primes for the D750 are a letdown... they feel like toys. had issues with build quality on the entry level glass before. before you buy tho:

  • are you okay with manual focus for that price range?
  • do you actually need f/1.8 or is f/2.8 fast enough? was looking at light mirrorless bodies earlier cuz my neck is killing me from carrying a heavy DSLR all day. anyway.
