Finally got my hands on a used a6400 but the kit lens is just not cutting it for low light stuff. Im heading to a concert in NYC in like three weeks and I really need something sharper that wont break the bank. My budget is strictly under 300 bucks right now.
Im torn between the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and the Sony 35mm f/1.8. The Sigma seems to get better reviews for sharpness but the Sony has stabilization which might help with my shaky hands... Im leaning toward the Sigma but I keep worrying about missing out on that OSS. Anyone have experience with either of these for live music?
Honestly, skip the OSS. I have shot tons of live music over the years and shutter speed is king in those dark venues. In my experience, you really need that wider aperture to freeze the action without cranking your ISO into oblivion. I used the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for a local show last year and it was a total game changer compared to the kit lens.
- The f/1.4 is significantly faster than the f/1.8, which helps way more than stabilization when subjects are moving.
- Sharpness is noticeably better wide open.
- Just use a faster shutter speed or a monopod if you are worried about shaking. Grab the Sigma. It fits your budget and the low light performance is legit better for concerts. You wont regret it.
Saw this earlier but just now getting to it. Honestly, I tried the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary and had issues with the autofocus hunting way too much in low light. It was kinda disappointing at a show. If you can stretch it, the Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS is a safer bet, even if the glass isnt as sharp. Just keep your shutter speed up regardless, seriously. Dont rely on the stabilization for moving subjects.
