So I finally picked up a used Sony A7III and I am loving it so far but honestly the kit lens just isnt cutting it for what I want to do. I have a trip to Japan coming up in like three weeks and I really want to do some street photography at night but my current setup is just too dark. I have been scrolling through forums for hours and I am just stuck. I saw everyone raving about the Sony 35mm f1.8 because its compact but then someone else said the Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art is way sharper even though its a total brick. I honestly dont want to carry a giant piece of glass around Tokyo all day but I also dont want blurry shots. My budget is around 600 bucks give or take. I looked at the Samyang/Rokinon stuff too because its way cheaper but are they actually reliable for long term use? I just cant decide if I should prioritize size or pure image quality for travel. Has anyone actually used these two in the field and is the extra weight of the Sigma really worth it over the native Sony lens?

Dragging that huge Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN Art around Tokyo is just gonna ruin your experience after four hours of walking. The weight adds up so fast when you are popping in and out of trains. Stick to something compact. The native Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 is plenty sharp for street photography, and honestly, the autofocus performance on the A7III with that native lens is super reliable. If you want a bit more reach or a different look, check out the Tamron 35mm F/2.8 Di III OSD, which is a total bargain.

Stumbled upon this thread. Before you pull the trigger, are you planning on shooting mostly wide open or do you stop down for street work? If you really want that sharp look without the bulk, look at the Samyang AF 35mm f/1.8 FE.
