im honestly so sick of carrying around three different primes every time I go out to shoot in Chicago, my lower back is literally dying and I spend half my time swapping glass instead of actually taking photos. I just want one lens that can do it all for my a7iv without making my images look like total mush. Is there actually one single best lens for any Sony mirrorless camera that isnt totally terrible at everything or am I chasing a stupid unicorn here...

you are definitely chasing a unicorn if you want perfection, but you can totally save your back without trashing your image quality tbh. i switched to a single-lens setup last year for walkaround street stuff and my spine has never been happier.

  • Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD: incredibly sharp center resolution, crazy versatile zoom range, but lacks optical stabilization (though your a7iv handles that fine) and wider ends.
  • Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS: stunning color rendition and constant aperture, autofocus is lightning fast, but it is noticeably heavier and costs more than the tamron. personally i run the tamron most days now. the extra light gathering at the wide end is super nice for low light around the loop, and stopping down just a bit gives you really crisp contrast across the frame. just grab one and leave the bag at home, you wont regret it.
