Ive been shooting with my a7iii for like five years now and I finally decided to sell off my bulky prime kit because carrying three lenses around downtown Chicago is driving me insane. I really need a solid all-arounder for travel and street photography before my trip to Europe next month. My logic was that the Sony 24-105 f4 would be the perfect range but man I keep hearing mixed things about corner sharpness when you open it up. Ive got about 1200 bucks set aside for this. Is the 24-105 really the gold standard or should I just suck it up and get the Tamron 28-75 G2? Im so torn.
Honestly, ditching the prime kit is a smart move if you want to actually enjoy your trip instead of playing gear tetris. I used the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS for a couple years and while the range is killer for street stuff, that corner sharpness thing is real, especially if you get a slightly softer copy. Before you pull the trigger, check these out:
- Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 - way sharper, lighter, and that f/2.8 is so nice for evening shots when you're grabbing dinner.
- Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art - basically the king of sharpness, tho it adds a bit of weight back in. Personally? I would grab the Tamron. You save enough cash for a nice dinner and the size difference is massive when you're walking all day.
Jumping in here. Forget the 24-105. If you want a better balance of weight and performance, the Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is the clear winner for travel. You get that extra stop of light which makes a huge difference in European cafes and dim streets. Honestly, the sharpness is way more consistent edge-to-edge than the Sony. Just keep it simple and get the Tamron, youll be much happier.
