I just got my first Sony a6400 and honestly have no clue what I'm doing with lenses. Im so excited to start shooting but the choices are overwhelming. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what lens should I get?
- Budget is around 500 bucks
- Mostly gonna use it for travel and my dog
- Need something that does a bit of everything
Really just looking for one decent lens so I dont have to carry a bag full of glass while walking around London.

Saw this earlier but just now responding. Everyone is pushing those zooms, but if you want travel versatility, you really need to look at primes too. Don't get me wrong, the zooms are fine, but they can be bulky.
- Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS is a total gem for dogs. That wide aperture makes it way easier to get those blurry backgrounds and handles low light in London pubs much better than any kit lens.
- Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is another solid pick. It is honestly sharper than the Sony glass and lets in so much light. It is basically glued to my camera when I travel. Personally, I find the 30-35mm range is perfect for general street stuff. You get more light for your money and the build quality is usually better than those budget variable aperture zooms.
Honestly, I had issues with the kit lens being too soft. You might dig the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary instead, it is way sharper and much smaller.
