Sorry if this is a dumb question but I just bought an A7IV and I am totally lost with lenses. I have about 1000 bucks and need one lens that does everything for my trip to Japan next month. Should I just get the kit lens or is there something better that wont break the bank?
Coming back to this, I totally agree with the others about skipping the kit lens. If you end up finding the Tamron or Sony options a bit too pricey, look into the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary. It is honestly a killer deal and super compact for walking around Japan all day. My biggest tip is to grab a decent circular polarizer, like a Hoya 67mm Pro1 Digital Circular Polarizer. It makes a huge difference for those bright afternoon shots at temples or cutting glare off windows. Whatever you pick, just keep your kit light. You are gonna be doing a ton of walking and your back will thank you later. Just enjoy the trip and dont stress too much about the gear!
^ This. Also, honestly, the Tamron is solid, but if you want that extra reach for street snaps in Japan, you might prefer something else.
- Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS is fantastic for landscapes and travel. It has reach the Tamron lacks!
- Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is lighter if you want to keep your setup tiny. I love my Sony zoom, it just never leaves my body. You really cant go wrong!
Congrats on the A7IV! Honestly, skip the kit lens. For Japan, you want reach and versatility. I have used the Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 for years and its super sharp plus way better in low light. It should fit right in your budget. You really dont need anything else for street shots and travel memories. Let me know if you want tips on settings for the trip!
