I just bought a Sony camera for my trip to Italy next month but im so lost with all these numbers. I have about 500 bucks left and just want one lens that does everything so I dont have to carry a bag of gear. sorry if this is dumb but what is the best all-around lens?

You should definitely look at the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Sony E for your trip! It is a fantastic choice because it fits your $500 budget and covers essential focal lengths. The f/2.8 aperture is amazing for low-light cathedrals. It is the most logical one-lens solution for weight and quality. You wont even need a gear bag!

@Reply #2 - good point. unfortunately i had focus issues with my first lens, so im cautious now. try a used Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS. TL;DR: stick to safe used gear.

Watch out for heavy glass or cheap superzooms. Italy involves tons of walking and stairs.

  • check the weight
  • avoid slow apertures Ngl heavy gear kills the mood fast...

ngl i have had some real issues with those super compact lenses before... they usually feel kinda cheap and the image quality isnt as good as i expected for the price. it is so disappointing to get halfway through a trip and have your gear fail. if you want something that is actually built to last, i would look for a used Sony E 18-105mm f/4 G OSS. it is a bit bigger but the build is solid and the internal zoom means it wont suck in dust while you are walking around dusty ruins. honestly i think it is a safer bet for reliability than some of the newer plastic stuff. you can find them for about 400 or 500 bucks used if you look around. just make sure you get a good return policy just in case... i have learned that the hard way. hope you have a great time in italy though, you are gonna love it.
