What's the absolute best all-around lens for a Sony full-frame setup if you could only pick one to live on your camera? I just pulled the trigger on a new A7IV after saving for literally a year and I'm so excited to finally join the club but honestly I'm drowning in all these reviews. I'm heading to Japan next month for a big two-week trip so I need something that can handle everything from neon streets in Shinjuku to temple landscapes in Kyoto without me having to swap glass every five minutes.

Right now I'm stuck between three main options:

  • Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM II (the dream lens but it's pricey and maybe heavy?)
  • Sony 20-70mm f4 G (love that extra wide end for tight streets)
  • Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN II (seems like a better value but is it as sharp?)

My budget is pretty firm at $2300 max for the lens part of my kit. I really want that f2.8 for the night shots but I'm kinda worried about lugging a heavy setup around all day and maybe the f4 with the modern ISO performance is enough? I'm leaning toward the 24-70 GM II because everyone says it's the best but is it really worth twice the price of the Sigma for a hobbyist like me? I dont want to regret the weight halfway through my vacation...

I'd suggest being careful about the weight since you'll be walking miles in Japan. While the Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM II is the gold standard, you might want to consider these practical points:
