Been stuck between the Sony 24-105mm f4 and that Tamron 28-75mm G2. Reviews say the Sony is a bit soft now but the Tamron reach is kinda short for what I need.

  • budget is around $1100
  • going to Italy in three weeks
  • need one lens for everything

Any better options I missed...

Ngl, Ive been super satisfied with the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lately. It starts at f/2.8 which is wild for a superzoom, and the MTF charts show it holds sharpness way better than that older Sony glass. Im happy with how it handles chromatic aberration in high contrast. Works well for Italy where you need reach without swapping lenses constantly.

Regarding what #2 said about "> need one lens for everything Unfortunately, the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS was just too soft." I totally agree that reliability is everything when you are traveling! You really cant afford gear that feels flimsy or gives you soft images when you are capturing once-in-a-lifetime memories. If you want something that is both robust and high-performing, I suggest looking at these specific options:

  • Sony FE 20-70mm F4 G
  • This lens is amazing because that extra width at 20mm is perfect for narrow streets. It is much sharper and more modern than the 24-105mm.
  • Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art
  • The build quality is fantastic and it feels very solid in the hand. I love the 20-70mm for its versatility. It is basically a dream for a one-lens setup because it covers so much ground without sacrificing quality. It is a very safe, professional choice for Italy tho. Have an amazing trip!

Ive had issues with both those lenses lately. Theyre basically a waste of money now.
