Ive been shooting Sony for years but im heading to Tokyo in three days and my main zoom just died on me. Totally stressed. I need one lens that does it all because im packing light and wont have time to swap. So I was thinking the 24-105mm G for the range but my logic was f4 might suck for night shots in the city. Then theres the Tamron 28-75 g2 which is fast but losing 24mm feels risky for tight streets. Ive got about $1100 to spend and need to buy this today so it arrives before my flight. Is there a better one lens solution im missing or should I just gamble on the f4...

^ This. Also, the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art is fantastic! I relied on it during a messy night in Shinjuku and the results were amazing. Such a safe, reliable beast!

In my experience shooting cities like Tokyo, losing that 24mm really hurts. Ive tried many lenses over the years and the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is the winner. It fits your budget and gives you f2.8 for those night vibes without sacrificing the wide end. Dont overthink it, the Sigma is basically the perfect one-lens solution for your trip... you wont regret having the extra light.

Regarding what #3 said about "This ^"

  • I totally agree with the sentiment but man, I really feel for you. Having your main glass just die right before a big trip is literally my worst nightmare and it happens way too often. Honestly its ridiculous how much we have to shell out for gear these days just for it to fail when we actually need it.
  • prices keep climbing while everything feels like cheap plastic
  • weather sealing is basically a marketing lie at this point
  • these companies act like we have infinite budgets for repairs It drives me crazy that pro gear is getting so fragile. I have stuff from ten years ago that still works, yet modern lenses seem to have an expiration date. Its a total scam that we spend thousands and still have to worry about reliability every time we pack a bag. Good luck in Tokyo tho, honestly hope the new setup doesnt let you down like the last one did...
