Im looking for a one-and-done lens for my A7III. Stuck between the Tamron 28-75 G2 and the Sigma 24-70 Art. My budget is $1k max so the Sony GM is out. Sigma has the 24mm wide end but the Tamron is way lighter for hiking... which one is the better all-arounder?

Like someone mentioned, that 24mm is huge. Check the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary if you want more savings.

  • tiny footprint
  • way cheaper Great budget alternative!

Honestly, ive spent hundreds of hours behind both of these over the years. In my experience, the choice really boils down to how much you value that extra 4mm on the wide end versus your back health.

  • Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art for Sony E-mount: The optics are technically superior and that 24mm is a lifesaver for landscapes. Its heavy tho, almost 300g heavier than the Tamron, which is a lot for a day trip.
  • Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2: This is the one I usually recommend for hikers. The VXD motor is incredibly snappy and the close-focusing distance is actually better for detail shots than the Sigma. If you are doing serious mileage on trails, go with the Tamron G2. You wont miss the 24mm as much as you will appreciate the lighter load in your bag. Let me know if you need any more technical specs on either glass.

Regarding what #2 said about the Sigma, check RTINGS for durability scores!

I feel your pain so much on this... been going back and forth on these two brands for what feels like a lifetime. Honestly, I've spent thousands of dollars trying to find a balance and it just doesn't exist. Last year I lugged the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art across Japan and by the end of the second week, I was so sick of the neck strain that I barely wanted to take the camera out of my bag. It is a beast. Then I tried the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 thinking it would solve all my problems, but then I am standing in front of a massive temple and I can't get the whole thing in frame because of that 28mm crop. It is just maddening. You either get the weight and the width or the light build and the cropped view. Why can't we just have one that does it all? It is like the companies are messing with us on purpose at this point. I've basically accepted that no matter which one I have on my camera, I am gonna be wishing I had the other one within an hour of shooting. It is a total headache.
