so i was thinking the kit lens would be enough for my kids soccer games but honestly im so fed up with the blurry shots and crappy low light performance. my logic was to save money but now im just wasting time so what is actually the best budget zoom under 500 dollars for my a6000?
honestly under 500 bucks is a bit of a tight spot for sports glass but you can definitely do better than that kit lens. before I list some stuff how far away are you typically standing? big difference between the sideline and the bleachers for soccer... anyway over the years ive used a bunch of these and for soccer on an a6000 you basically have a few solid routes:
- Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS is a huge step up in sharpness and reach over the basic kit. you can find these used for around 350 easy and its way more versatile.
- Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD gives you way more reach for those far away shots. it lacks stabilization tho so youll need a steady hand or a monopod since the a6000 doesnt have in body stabilization.
- Sony E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS is the dirt cheap option. its not a miracle worker in low light but the extra zoom helps you get closer so the autofocus can actually keep up better than the wide lens. if your shots are blurry cuz of movement make sure youre shooting at like 1/500s minimum. tbh just crank the iso and dont worry about the grain... better to have a grainy sharp shot than a clean blurry one. let me know your typical distance and i can narrow it down.
I had the same issue shooting my cousins track meets and that kit glass was just useless. I eventually switched over to Tamron zooms and honestly they are solid for the price. Just grab one of their telephoto options for Sony. You get way better sharpness and they handle the budget thing better than the native lenses. It definitely saved my shots without costing a fortune.
