So I finally picked up a used a7iii last month and honestly the kit lens is starting to drive me crazy lol. Its just so slow in low light and the bokeh is basically non existent. I want to buy my first real prime lens before I head out on a trip to Chicago next month but there are way too many options out there. I spent hours on YouTube and everyone keeps saying the Sony 85mm f1.8 is the sharpest for the price, but then I see other people saying a 35mm is the only lens you will ever need. Im kinda stuck because I want to do some street photography but also some portraits of my girlfriend while we are traveling. I read that the 35mm f1.8 is great but some people say it looks too digital or something? Not even sure what that means really. My budget is pretty firm at $600 and I am looking at used copies too. Is the 35mm really that much better for general walk-around stuff than a 50mm or should I just go for the 85mm and deal with having to stand a mile away from everything? Just feels like every time I make a choice I find a thread saying I am making a mistake...

For city stuff, a wider prime is definitely the must-have for safety. I remember being super nervous about picking my first one because I didnt want to waste money, and taking a long lens on a trip once basically ruined my shots since I couldnt fit anything in. You might want to consider the 35mm range first. Are you mostly shooting outdoors or do you want to use it inside restaurants too?
