I've used the 24-70 GM forever but got a high-end gig in NYC next week and need that f1.4 bokeh. I'm looking at the 85mm vs the 50mm GM but I'm worried about the eye-AF tracking speed being weird on my older body. Which prime lens is the actual goat for Sony portraits?

I used both for a shoot in Manhattan last year. The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM has decent compression, but the AF speed felt a bit dated on my older body.

  • 85mm: Classic look, but slower focus motors.
  • Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM: Modern tracking and better for tight city streets. The 50mm is the goat for reliability when you cant afford to miss focus on a gig.
