Which wildlife lens should I buy for my Sony a7R V?

I finally upgraded to the Sony a7R V, and I’m absolutely blown away by the autofocus and detail! However, I’m struggling to pick a wildlife lens that can actually keep up with that massive 61MP sensor. I mostly shoot small birds and some deer, so reach is a huge priority, but I also need something sharp enough to handle heavy cropping. I’ve been torn between the Sony 200-600mm G for the extra length and the 100-400mm GM for the supposedly superior glass quality. For those of you shooting wildlife on the R V, which lens do you find gives the best balance of sharpness and autofocus speed for fast-moving subjects?

Hmm, I've had a different experience when it comes to the "reach is king" argument. While the previous reply makes a good point about the extra millimeters, I’d actually suggest a different approach for that Sony Alpha 7R V Mirrorless Camera.

In my opinion, the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS is the better investment for that 61MP sensor. Don't get me wrong, the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS is a value beast, but the GM glass is noticeably sharper. Since you're shooting on the R V, you can basically treat it like an APS-C camera and still get 26MP images.

But be careful—heavy cropping on the 200-600mm can sometimes reveal its slight softness at the long end compared to the GM. If you really need more reach later, you might want to consider adding the Sony FE 1.4x Teleconverter to the 100-400mm. It’s a bit pricier overall, but for those tiny birds, that extra micro-contrast on the GM really helps the AI autofocus lock on faster. Just my two cents, anyway! Hope this helps!

For your situation, have you considered the Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD for Sony E? It's a budget-friendly beast that's super sharp and way easier to carry than the 200-600mm, tbh.

Totally agree with the above regarding the reach! I've been using the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS on my R V for about six months now, and honestly, for those tiny songbirds, you just can't beat having 600mm natively.

One thing I wanted to add from a safety and reliability perspective: if you're hiking into damp or dusty spots for deer, the internal zoom design of the 200-600mm is a lifesaver. Unlike the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS which extends and can sometimes suck in moisture or grit, the 200-600mm stays the same length, which gives me way more peace of mind in the field. Plus, the internal zoom is much faster for tracking erratic movement! If you find it too heavy, maybe grab the Sony FE 1.4x Teleconverter to use with a lighter lens, but the 200-600mm is the sharpest 'safe' bet for that 61MP sensor IMO. Hope this helps you decide!

Honestly, for small birds and that 61MP sensor, you'll definitely want the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS. In my experience, the extra reach is non-negotiable for cropping!
