Canon Unveils Groundbreaking 27x Portable Broadcast Zoom Lens and Next-Gen Digital Drive Unit

Canon has announced the launch of the CJ27ex7.3B, a groundbreaking 2/3″ portable broadcast lens with an impressive 27x optical zoom. This new addition to Canon’s extensive broadcast lens lineup boasts superb optical performance and is classified as a UHDxs lens, representing Canon’s highest image quality rating for broadcast optics.

The CJ27ex7.3B lens offers a versatile focal range of 7.3mm to 197mm, which can be further extended to 394mm with the built-in 2x extender. This portable lens combines the mobility of a conventional ENG (Electronic News Gathering) lens with the exceptional zoom ratio typically found in 2/3″ box lenses. Its wide-angle capabilities at 7.3mm allow for establishing shots, while the 197mm telephoto end enables tight shots of the subject, making it an ideal choice for hand-held news, live sports, and broadcast studio applications.

Brian Mahar, senior vice president and general manager at Canon U.S.A., Inc., emphasized Canon’s commitment to providing the best equipment for enhancing visual storytelling, stating, “The new lens we are introducing will result in strikingly sharp video footage for audiences watching news, entertainment, sports and more.”

The CJ27ex7.3B lens is equipped with Canon’s next-generation drive unit, the e-Xs V, which features an angled 20-pin connector and a built-in USB-C connector for improved equipment setup, maintenance, and operability. The lens also supports Focus Breathing Compensation, minimizing image distortion when racking focus, and Automatic Restoration of Illumination Attenuation (ARIA) technology, which helps reduce the effects of f-drop/ramping during zooming.

Canon plans to showcase the CJ27ex7.3B broadcast lens at NAB 2024 in the Las Vegas Convention Center and expects it to be available for purchase in August 2024. Interested parties are encouraged to contact their local Canon representative for further information or inquiries about the lens.
