Ugh, Im so frustrated. I finally saved up enough to get a Canon R10 because everyone said it was great for beginners but now I have no idea what lens to actually put on the thing. I spent all my money on the body and now I only have like 200 or 300 bucks left for a lens. Im trying to take photos of people walking around downtown here in Chicago but everything I see online just looks like gibberish with all the numbers and letters.
I tried using the kit lens that came with it but the photos just look kinda flat and boring I guess? Maybe its me. I just want that look where the background is super blurry but the person is sharp. Is that even possible with my budget or am I stuck with this kit lens forever? I leave for a trip in two weeks and I really just want something small that doesnt make me look like a total weirdo walking around with a giant camera. Does anyone have a suggestion for a cheap lens that actually works for street photography or am I just dreaming here...
Totally get it, the kit lens is fine but it just cant give you that blurry background look! You definitely need a prime lens. Check these out:

Been thinking about your post for a few hours now and honestly, I am still annoyed on your behalf. It is such a massive scam how these companies hook you with an affordable camera body and then basically leave you stranded when it comes to decent glass. You think you are finally in the club, then reality hits that every halfway decent lens costs as much as a used car. It drives me crazy how they market these things as beginner-friendly but provide a kit lens that makes everything look like a blurry smartphone snapshot from 2012. I remember when I first started out, I saved up for months only to realize I could barely afford a lens cap, let alone the glass I actually wanted. It feels like you are just throwing money into a pit sometimes. You want that specific look, but the industry just wants you to keep spending until your bank account is totally empty. It is just ridiculous. Dont let the gear talk get to you too much, though. Seriously, just ignore all those people online who tell you that you need to drop thousands just to get a decent street shot. Most of the time they are just flexing anyway. Just try to get out there and practice even if the gear feels limiting, because at the end of the day, the companies are just laughing all the way to the bank while we are stuck stressing over aperture numbers.
