So I finally bit the bullet and bought a Canon EOS R5 because I wanted the best camera for my trip to Japan in three months. I honestly have no idea what Im doing though. I just see people talking about RF lenses vs EF lenses and adapters and I feel super overwhelmed. Right now I just have the body and a lens cap lol. Im planning on doing a mix of street photography in Tokyo and then some landscape shots when we go up to the mountains. I really dont want to have to carry a bag full of heavy glass everywhere I go since its gonna be a lot of walking. My budget for a lens is around 1500 maybe 2000 if it is really worth it but I have no clue where to start looking. Is there one lens that is just good for basically everything so I dont have to keep switching them out? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I just dont want to ruin my photos by buying the wrong thing. What would you guys suggest for someone like me?
Congrats on the R5, that camera is an absolute beast and you are gonna have a blast in Japan. Honestly, if you only want one lens to do it all without breaking your back, dont stress about the adapter stuff yet. Stick to native glass for now since the RF mount is where the magic happens. My top recommendation for travel is the Canon RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM. It covers pretty much everything you need for street shots and wider landscapes, and the image quality is super consistent. - This thing has insane reach if you need to zoom in on stuff, and it is pretty light for all that glass. I have been using the 24-105mm for a while and honestly have no complaints. It feels solid, the stabilization works well, and the weight is manageable for long days walking through Tokyo. You wont have to deal with swapping lenses constantly, which is a life saver when you are trying to catch a cool moment. Just grab one of those and spend the rest of your budget on a good strap and extra batteries. You really dont need anything else to get started.
Been thinking about your lens dilemma. Are you leaning more towards wide landscapes or street zooms? I tried the Canon RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM and it was decent, but honestly the Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM is much sharper.
