I recently upgraded to the new Canon EOS R6 Mark II mirrorless camera and I'm looking for advice on the best RF lenses to pair with this body to get the most out of it. I shoot a variety of subjects including landscapes, portraits, wildlife, and some video.
For landscapes, I'm considering the RF 15-35mm f/2.8 or RF 14-35mm f/4. For portraits and shallow depth of field, the RF 85mm f/1.2 or RF 50mm f/1.2 look amazing but pricey. And for wildlife and sports, I'm eyeing the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1.
I'd love to hear firsthand experience from other R6 Mark II shooters on your favorite RF glass and why. What lenses have impressed you the most for sharpness, speed, versatility, and value? Are there any must-have primes or zooms I should strongly consider?
I'm looking to put together a solid kit of 2-4 lenses to cover my needs. Let me know your top lens picks to help me decide. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Here are my top picks for the R6 II based on different photography needs:
For an everyday versatile zoom, the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is hard to beat. It offers a useful focal range, fast f/2.8 aperture throughout, and excellent image stabilization. The optics are top-notch with sharp results, though the edges are a bit softer. It's not cheap, but a worthwhile investment.
If you shoot sports, wildlife or events, the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is an outstanding telephoto zoom. The AF speed is blistering fast, and the triple-mode 5-stop IS works great for both stills and video. It's smaller and lighter than EF versions too.
For ultimate low-light performance and subject isolation, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM prime is simply phenomenal. The rendering is gorgeous with creamy bokeh. Just be prepared for the high price and hefty size.
Landscape and architecture shooters should consider the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM ultra-wide zoom. The perspective distortion at 15mm is dramatic, and corner-to-corner sharpness is good (but not perfect). Having a removable hood for filters is very convenient.
For even more reach than the 70-200mm, the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is an excellent choice, especially paired with the R6 II's great AF system. The long focal length does come with a narrower max aperture though.
If you're into macro, the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM goes beyond 1:1 with an impressive 1.4x magnification. Hybrid IS and the SA control ring for soft focus effects are nice bonuses. Just be aware of the larger size compared to EF macro lenses.
For incredible portraits, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM is possibly the best lens available, period. The sharpness and bokeh wide open at f/1.2 are breathtaking. It's very pricey and bulky, but if you make money shooting portraits, it could be justified.
Street photographers should give the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM a serious look. It's small, lightweight, affordable and the close-focusing is very handy. The f/1.8 aperture provides decent low-light ability and background blur for a 35mm lens.
Finally, if you want to capture expansive architecture or interiors, the new Canon RF 10-20mm f/4L IS STM zoom gets you super wide. Optical performance appears to be very good, and the lightweight design works great on gimbals or handheld for video.
Canon EOS R6 Mark II is a versatile full-frame mirrorless camera that supports a wide range of lenses, making it suitable for various photography styles, including portraits, landscapes, wildlife, and more.

Quickly jumping in here before I head out for a shoot. Ive been living with the R6 II for a year now and honestly, the lens that surprised me most was the Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM. I debated between it and the f/2.8 version for months, but for landscapes, you're usually stopped down anyway. That extra 1mm on the wide end is actually super useful for wide vistas. Its been my favorite for travel since its so light and portable... I got mine for about $1,200 on sale and it works well for everything from cliffsides to tight interiors. Regarding wildlife, the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is just incredible. I was worried about that f/7.1 aperture at first, ngl, but the R6 II sensor is so good with noise that it doesnt really matter. I spent a whole morning tracking hawks last fall and the hit rate was just insane. If you can swing the $2,800 price tag, its a beast. Honestly, very satisfied with how my kit has turned out. No complaints at all with these two in the bag.
The new released RF 35mm f/1.4 VCM lens is a great wide-angle and street lens for R6 Mark II.
In my opinion, the best zoom lens for Canon EOS R6 Mark II is Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM and the best prime is Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM.
These lenses provide a solid balance of versatility and image quality, making them excellent choices for your Canon EOS R6 Mark II.
Been using this for years, no complaints
