I recently upgraded to the Canon EOS R5 and am looking for the ideal lens to pair with it for video work. I mostly shoot short films, interviews, and documentary-style content.

I'm considering lenses with focal lengths between 24-70mm for versatility. Priorities are sharpness, good low light performance, and fast & quiet autofocus. Some stabilization would also be a plus.

I would really appreciate any insights from R5 owners on your experience with various lenses for video! Let me know your thoughts and recommendations.

As an RF 28-70mm f/2L owner, I highly recommend it for video on the Canon EOS R5. This lens stands out for:

  1. Exceptional sharpness
  2. Perfect compatibility with R5's IBIS
  3. Versatile 28-70mm range
  4. Fast f/2 aperture for low-light and bokeh
  5. Unique character
  6. Flexibility for interviews and B-roll

While expensive, it's a worthy investment for serious videographers. The lens maximizes the R5's potential, offering outstanding image quality and versatility. Its performance in various scenarios makes it one of the best video lenses for the R5. If you're looking to elevate your video work, the RF 28-70mm f/2L is an excellent choice.

Regarding what #2 said about the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM - it really is a fantastic workhorse for the R5. I have used it on several short films and it never misses. But if you are trying to be more budget-conscious, there are ways to get that same quality without the massive price tag. In my experience, you shouldnt overlook the EF glass. I have tried many setups over the years and using the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with a used Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM is a very methodical way to save over a thousand dollars. You lose the lens-based stabilization, but the R5 IBIS is strong enough that it barely matters for handheld interviews. Another solid alternative is the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. Its significantly cheaper than the f/2.8 version and the extra reach is incredibly useful for documentary work where you cant always move your tripod. The autofocus is just as fast and quiet, which is huge for video. For interviews, f/4 still gives you plenty of background blur on a full-frame sensor anyway.

To add to the point above, I'm honestly in the exact same boat. I'm so satisfied with the R5 as a body but finding the right lens for my documentary work has been such a headache. I've been dealing with this same dilemma for like three months now and it's really frustrating that I still haven't found a setup that works well for everything I need... just feels like I'm stuck in limbo.
