Which portrait lens should I get for my Canon 80D because Im totally torn between the 50mm f1.8 and the 85mm f1.8 and cant decide which one makes more sense. Ive been using the kit lens forever and I am so ready for some actual background blur. Mostly gonna be shooting photos of my niece and nephew running around the backyard next month for a family reunion so I need something that focuses pretty fast. My budget is around 350 bucks max since Im just a hobbyist. The 50mm is super cheap and Ive heard great things about the nifty fifty on a crop sensor like the 80D, but people keep saying 85mm is way more flattering for faces even though it might be a bit tight when Im shooting inside their living room. Is the 85mm too zoomed in on a crop body for everyday stuff or should I just grab it anyway...
Honestly, grab the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens. In my experience, the compression on faces is way better than the nifty fifty. I shot a ton of family events with it on my old 80D. Yeah, it gets tight indoors, but the USM motor is fast enough to track kids sprinting. Just back up a few steps. The bokeh is way creamier too.
Regarding what #1 said about the Canon EF 85mm f 1.8 USM Lens, the ring-type USM really makes a huge difference for tracking kids outdoors. If you want a cheaper middle ground, look at the Sigma 56mm f 1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens too.
Omg I have this exact same issue with my gear. Been dealing with it for like two months now and honestly still cant figure out what to buy either.
