@admin The best choice is of course the recently released Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z lens. But it is also very expensive !

For the Canon EOS R5, I highly recommend the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens. It's a versatile zoom lens that covers a great range for travel and vlogging. The image quality is superb, and the autofocus performance is excellent, thanks to Canon's Nano USM technology. It's also relatively compact and lightweight, making it a great choice for travel. The constant f/4 aperture is decent for low-light situations, and the built-in image stabilization helps with handheld shooting. It's a bit pricey, but definitely worth the investment if you want a high-quality all-around lens for your R5.

Have you considered the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM? It's a compact and affordable prime lens that can be a great option for vlogging and travel videos. The 35mm focal length is a versatile choice, wide enough for some environmental shots but tight enough for close-ups and talking head videos. The f/1.8 aperture allows for decent low-light performance and subject separation, while the built-in image stabilization helps with handheld shooting. Additionally, it has decent macro capabilities, which can be useful for product shots or capturing fine details. It's lightweight, compact, and relatively inexpensive, making it a great addition to your kit.

@Reply #9 - good point! Cant wait to see your test results. Adding to the discussion, I reckon the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM is a massive sleeper for video on the R5. If you are doing any gimbal work or vlogging, that extra width makes a huge difference compared to the 24-105. Its usually about 2100 bucks, but the built-in IS works in perfect harmony with the R5 sensor stabilization. Another shout is the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM for interviews. Its heavy, yeah, but the way it renders skin tones and background blur is basically next level. If you can handle the weight and the 2300 dollar price tag, its a beast. Honestly, the autofocus on these L-series primes is so much better than the older EF glass. TL;DR:

Re: "RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z lens, you..." - honestly im in the exact same boat as you guys and it's frustrating. Finding glass that actually keeps up with the Canon EOS R5 sensor readout is way harder than it should be in 2024. I've been testing a few setups and the technical bottlenecks are just killing me lately. Basically, keep an eye out for these dealbreakers before you drop the cash:

  • Watch for massive focus breathing on the wider zooms, it totally ruins a clean rack focus when the focal length shifts like 10%...
  • Be super careful with heavy lenses if you aren't using a support bracket, the mount stress on the R5 during handheld whip pans is real.
  • Check the IBIS interaction because some of these older designs actually fight the body stabilization and create this weird jittery corner warping. Its honestly disappointing because the raw specs look good on paper, but the real-world performance just isnt there yet for high-end video work. Still trying to find a setup that doesnt feel like a compromise... thought I'd have it figured out by now but nope.

The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens is another awesome option to consider for video on the R5. Stellar optics, fast aperture, and Sigma's excellent autofocus capabilities. It's only $1099 and tiny/lightweight compared to Canon's version. Main downside is lack of optical stabilization.

For the Canon EOS R5, I highly recommend considering the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens. It's an excellent all-around zoom lens that covers a versatile focal range, making it suitable for various video shooting scenarios, from wide-angle to short telephoto.

The constant f/4 aperture ensures consistent exposure throughout the zoom range, and the Optical Image Stabilization (IS) system helps capture smooth, steady handheld video footage. Additionally, the Nano USM autofocus system is quick, accurate, and virtually silent, which is crucial for video recording.

If you need a wider angle of view or a brighter aperture, the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM is another fantastic option. Its wide-angle zoom range and f/2.8 constant aperture make it ideal for landscapes, architecture, and vlogging scenarios where you need a wide field of view and shallow depth of field.

For those who prefer a prime lens, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM is an excellent choice. Its ultra-bright f/1.2 aperture allows for stunning low-light performance and beautiful bokeh, perfect for cinematic footage. The Dual Nano USM autofocus system ensures quick and precise focusing, while the compact and lightweight design is well-suited for run-and-gun videography.

Ultimately, the choice depends on your specific video shooting needs, but any of these lenses would be an excellent investment for the Canon EOS R5 and provide outstanding video performance.
