What is the absolute best telephoto lens for the R7 that doesnt suffer from that weird shutter shock or AF hunting? Ive been shooting birds for a decade but this crop sensor transition is driving me crazy with the EF adapter lag. Need something under $2000 for an Everglades trip next Tuesday...
> What is the absolute best telephoto lens for the R7 that doesnt suffer from that weird shutter shock or AF hunting? Honestly, I went through the same thing when I first got my R7. I was so disappointed with how my old EF glass performed with the adapter... it felt sluggish and missed focus right when a bird would take off. It is really frustrating when you spend that kind of money and things just dont click like they used to on a DSLR. For your budget and trip next Tuesday, I would honestly say skip the crazy expensive L glass for now. I had issues with the weight and price of the high-end stuff, so I tried these instead:
- Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM
- Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM The 100-400 is surprisingly sharp for how cheap it is. Is it perfect? No, the slow aperture is a bummer in the early morning light, but its so light you can hike the Everglades all day without a tripod. If you need more reach, that 800mm is weirdly dark at f/11 but for bright daylight, it actually keeps up way better than my adapted lenses ever did. Unfortunately, the R7 still has that mechanical shutter shock issue regardless of the lens, so I usually just stick to Electronic First Curtain Shutter. Its not as good as a high-end pro body, but it helps a lot. Definitely check used listings to save even more cash for your trip. You got this, it is gonna be a blast anyway!
