What's the best portrait lens for the RP that actually stays in focus? Honestly I'm so fed up with my kit lens, it's way too slow in low light and the bokeh is just kinda messy.

I have a family wedding in Chicago in two weeks and I'm totally panicking. Need something sharp under $700...

Ive been shooting for years and learned the hard way that missing focus at a big family event is a total nightmare. Not fun. Since you are on the RP, you really want something native so it doesnt hunt when the lights go down at the reception. In my experience, you should definitely grab the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM. Its basically built for exactly what you need. The focal length is super flattering for people, and that image stabilization is a total lifesaver when you are shooting handheld during the ceremony. Its sharp, reliable, and well under your $700 limit. If you think 85mm might be too tight for crowded indoor shots, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is the other main choice. Its tiny and way cheaper, which is nice, but honestly it is not as creamy or sharp as the 85mm. The bokeh on the 85mm is just way smoother for those professional looking portraits. Whatever you do, dont mess around with adapters or weird third-party stuff for a wedding if you are already panicking. Seriously though. Stick to native RF glass so the Eye-AF actually works properly. I have tried adapting older stuff and while it saves money, it sometimes stutters right when you need it most... just not worth the stress tbh.

So true about the gear stress, nothing worse than fighting your kit while everyone is dancing. Since you need to stay under $700, you actually have some fantastic options that will blow that kit lens out of the water! Honestly, the RP is a little beast when you put the right glass on it, especially for portraits. I'd look at these for sure:

  • Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM is my top recommendation. It is incredibly sharp and the stabilization helps a ton in dim venues.
  • Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a total bargain. Its small, fast, and great for low light when you need a wider shot. Go for the 85mm f/2 though, the focal length is perfect for those classic wedding portraits and it keeps you at a nice distance. You're gonna have a blast in Chicago, dont panic!
