I bought this R6 for my Italy trip next month but im so overwhelmed by all these confusing numbers and weird letters. I have like $800 left and just want one lens that does everything so I dont have to carry a bunch of stuff. Sorry if this is dumb but what should I get?

In my experience, the most reliable and safe option for Italy is:

Just saw this and wanted to jump in while I have a sec. Building on the earlier suggestion, you basically have two paths depending on if you value weight or zoom range. Both lenses mentioned are reliable choices for Italy where you dont want to be swapping gear in crowded spots.

  • Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM: This is the safest bet for the budget. It is very light and covers most street scenes.
  • Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM: Better for zooming in on far-away details, though it is heavier and often costs more. Quick tips for the road:
  • Grab a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I card. You dont want to run out of storage mid-trip.
  • Buy a lens hood. It protects the glass from accidental bumps in tight crowds. The R6 is a beast, so youll get amazing photos either way. Enjoy the trip!

Agreed. To add to that, the Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM is technically superior. Its 10x range and faster Nano USM motor provide way more versatility if you find a deal.

i was pretty stressed about this too before my trip to florence last year. i ended up trying a few different setups and honestly, sticking to the higher-end native rf glass was the best move i made. i compared my old gear to some newer lenses and the difference in the street shots was pretty obvious once i got home.

  • Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM - i managed to snag a refurbished one for around $850. compared to the cheaper non-L version, the weather sealing gave me a lot of peace of mind when it started drizzling near the colosseum.
  • Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM - i also tried using this for a few days. it is way more discrete for street photography than those big zooms and the low light performance is just stellar for night shots. i have been super satisfied with the results from the L series zoom tho. even if it stretches the budget a tiny bit or you have to find it used, the colors and the constant aperture just make life easier when youre moving between bright plazas and dark alleys. definitely better than messing with adapters and old ef glass while youre trying to enjoy a vacation.
