What is the best all-around lens for a Canon R6?

So I finally pulled the trigger on a Canon R6 after years of shooting on an old 80D but now I am totally stuck on what glass to actually get for it. I am leaving for a big trip to Tokyo in like three weeks and I really need just one solid lens that can stay on the camera the whole time. I looked at the 24-105mm f/4L since everyone says it is the ultimate travel lens but then I saw a bunch of people online saying that f/4 is basically useless once the sun goes down or if you are inside a restaurant. Then I looked at the 24-70mm f/2.8 but honestly it is way out of my budget and looks heavy as hell to carry around all day.

Heres what I am looking for:

  • Budget is around $1300 maybe a bit more if I go used
  • Needs to be good for low light street shots and family stuff
  • Not too massive because I will be walking like 10 miles a day
  • Sharpness is key because I want to print some of these for the wall

I am super torn because if I go with the f/4 am I gonna regret not having that extra stop of light for night markets? But if I go with something shorter like a 35mm prime I might miss the zoom for architecture stuff. Is there some middle ground I am missing or should I just suck it up and get the 24-105? My head is spinning trying to decide before the flight...

I've tried many setups over the years and honestly, the f/4 fear is mostly just internet noise. In my experience, the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is the only lens you need for a trip like this. I have printed large photos from f/4 shots and they look fantastic because the R6 sensor is basically a low-light king. You wont regret the extra reach when you are trying to frame those tight Tokyo street corners... kinda essential for travel. My best tip is to trust the ISO and dont be afraid to push it to 6400. If you still feel nervous, buy a used Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM for your pocket as a safety net. Its the safest way to cover all your bases without breaking your bank account. Stick with the L glass for the weather sealing tho, you never know when itll rain.
