so I finally bit the bullet and bought a Canon EOS R5 last week after saving up for like two years, mostly because I wanted something really nice for taking pictures of my dog running around the backyard and our upcoming trip to Maine in October. but here is the embarrassing part... I literally only bought the body because I had no idea what lens to get and got totally overwhelmed by all the numbers and letters. Im on a budget of around 1000 to 1500 bucks max now since the camera itself cost an arm and a leg. sorry if this is a super basic or dumb question since Im totally new to real cameras, but what is the best all-around lens for someone like me who just wants to shoot everything from landscapes on vacation to my fast dog without needing to swap lenses out every five minutes?
Congrats on the R5, but honestly that budget is gonna make things pretty tough for that body. Not sure but I heard people struggling to find a good all-around RF glass under fifteen hundred bucks that actually keeps up with a fast dog and handles landscape stuff well without swapping.
- The native zoom options in that price range unfortunately leave a lot to be desired compared to what the sensor can really do.
- I had issues with some of the cheaper variable aperture lenses breathing way too much and struggling in low light during my own testing.
- Someone told me adapting older EF glass is the way to go if you are stuck under 1500, though autofocus isnt always as snappy for action shots. Frankly, shooting a running dog and wide landscapes on one lens without spending big money is asking a lot from Canon's current lineup. You might end up disappointed with the compromise if you expect top tier sharpness from a budget walkaround zoom. Maybe look into a used EF 24-70 with an adapter so you still have some cash left for your Maine trip. Just my two cents.
