I feel like such an idiot asking this but I finally bit the bullet and bought an R5 because everyone said it was the best, but now I have this expensive camera body and literally no clue what lens to buy. Im just trying to take nice photos of my dogs in the backyard and maybe some travel shots, but looking at Canon's website is making my head spin with all the numbers and letters. My budget is around 1000 bucks and I need something by next month for a trip. Is there just one lens that does everything so I dont have to keep switching them out? Im totally lost here...

Honestly, for dogs and travel, I love my Canon RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM. It covers everything! It is so versatile, you will never need to swap it out. Love it!

Building on the earlier suggestion, I personally wouldnt drop the whole budget on just one lens if you want to capture your dogs running around. Be careful with those variable aperture lenses, as they struggle when the sun dips. You might want to consider the Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM for those sharp backyard portraits.

  • It is super cheap and compact
  • The low light performance beats almost anything else for the price
  • Keeps your kit light for travel

Dude, the R5 is an absolute beast! Seriously, congrats on the purchase, its an amazing camera. Dont beat yourself up, the Canon lens lineup is massive and totally overwhelming at first. For your budget and wanting to keep it simple, just grab this one:

  • Canon RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM Lens It covers everything from wide travel views to zooming in on your dogs, and its super lightweight. Honestly, you wont want to take it off. Quick tips before you head out:
  • Grab a fast SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC Memory Card so you dont run out of space while shooting bursts of your pups.
  • Keep your firmware updated on the camera body for the best auto-focus performance. Seriously reach out if you get stuck with the settings, you are gonna have a blast with that setup!
