What is the best all-around lens for the Canon EOS R5 Mark II?

Just picked up the R5 Mark II last week and honestly my mind is blown. The AF tracking on this thing is just leagues ahead of my old R5, even if the battery life is kinda draining faster than I expected during long shoots. Ive been shooting weddings and street photography for about ten years now, so Im definitely not new to the system, but I find myself stuck in that typical gear limbo where I cant decide what should stay glued to the body.

My current kit is mostly primes, which is great for portraits, but sometimes the pace of a wedding makes swapping glass feel like a total nightmare. I really need something versatile that wont compromise that insane 45MP resolution because whats the point of having a beast of a sensor if I put sub-par glass on it? My budget is flexible, maybe around 2.5k to 3k max, and I need this sorted before I head out to a destination shoot in Iceland next month. I need something that can handle a bit of everything without being so heavy that my wrists give out by noon.

I was looking at the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L, but part of me is worried itll feel redundant if I keep using my 50mm f/1.2. Should I just commit to the trinity and stop overthinking the weight, or is there a sleeper lens I should be looking at instead? I keep seeing mixed reviews about the edge-to-edge sharpness when wide open, and with the R5 II sensor showing off every single flaw, I just dont want to regret the purchase. Does anyone actually use the 24-105 f/2.8 as a daily driver, or is that just too massive for someone who likes to be quick on their feet?

Honestly, just grab the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM. It is the gold standard for a reason.

  • Sharpness is insane even on the R5 II sensor.
  • The 24-105mm f/2.8 is way too heavy for street work.
  • Your 50mm f/1.2 is great for portraits, but the zoom gives you speed. Stop overthinking it. The trinity works well for a reason and you wont regret the versatility for your shoot.

Just catching up on this thread. I swapped to the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM for weddings and honestly, the image quality is unmatched. It replaces a bag of primes easily.

  • Sharpness is consistent across the frame
  • bokeh is creamy and holds up on that 45MP sensor It is heavier, but the results save me so much editing time. Totally worth the weight trade-off for professional work.
