I just got this Canon R50 camera because I wanted better pictures of my sons soccer games but the little lens that came in the box doesnt see very far at all. I have a big game this Saturday so I'm kinda in a rush and I really need to find one of those zoom things that can actually see across the field but I am so confused by all the numbers and stuff. My budget is pretty tight like maybe $300 max if that is even possible. I keep seeing things about adapters online but I dont even know what that means or if I need one for this specific camera... what is the best cheap zoom lens I should get that just works?
If you want to keep things simple for the game this Saturday, you should grab the Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM. It fits your R50 natively so you wont need to buy any confusing adapters.
- It gives you plenty of zoom for a soccer field and stays within that $300 price point.
- The autofocus is quiet and fast enough to keep up with kids running around.
- Tip: Since this lens doesnt let in a ton of light, try to stay on the side of the field where the sun is behind your back. I have shot plenty of youth sports with similar setups. It is a decent budget option that gets the job done without breaking the bank or being too heavy to carry around. If you get stuck on which buttons to press once you get it, just ask!
