leaving for my kids tournament this weekend and still havent picked a zoom for my r10... budget is tight like under 500 bucks. stuck between the 18-150mm or just grabbing the cheaper 55-210mm. need to decide tonight so it ships in time. which one is actually better for action shots?
> Reach is king tbh. Totally agree. I used the Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM at my nephews soccer game last month and was super happy with the results. The extra 60mm really makes a difference when they are on the far side of the field. That STM motor is surprisingly snappy for action shots. Its so much lighter than my old DSLR gear too. No complaints here, worked perfectly.
I've tried many setups and you should grab the Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM. Reach is king tbh.
- Better reach
- Cheaper Saves you cash.
Quickly jumping in here before you buy! @Reply #3 - good point! So basically it comes down to whether you want that extra reach or if you want to make sure you actually catch the shot without fumbling with gear. Honestly, the Canon RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM is an absolute lifesaver for these tournaments. I've been shooting sports for years and reliability is everything. The Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM is cool for the distance, but being stuck at 55mm when the action moves right toward you is a total nightmare. You want that versatility! Spend the full 500 and grab the 18-150, its a fantastic lens and you wont regret having that wide end for the team huddles and trophy shots. Trust me, you'll love it!! Get it ordered tonight so it makes it in time!
> need to decide tonight so it ships in time. To add to the point above: if you only have one camera body, grab the Canon RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM. Over the years, I've seen too many people miss shots while fumbling to change lenses mid-game. The 18-150 covers everything from the bench to the action... its right at your 500 buck limit but skipping lens swaps is worth the extra cash for reliability.
> skipping lens swaps is worth the extra cash for reliability. Totally agree! This is such a fantastic point because fumbling with gear during a big game is just so stressful. I always tell people to check out some comparison tools on sites like The Digital Picture... they do amazing brand comparisons between native Canon glass and third-party options like Sigma or Tamron. Even if you're leaning towards the Canon glass, seeing how it stacks up against other brands really makes you feel more confident and safe about your choice! Its better to be safe and know you've got the most reliable setup for those once-in-a-lifetime shots! You're gonna have an amazing time at the tournament!
