I am so tired of looking at lens charts because nothing seems to fit the R7 right. I've got a trip to some local wetlands coming up in three weeks and my budget is capped at $1800 but every pro lens is like $10k. I read that the old EF 400mm f/5.6 is a legend but some say the AF is too twitchy on mirrorless. Then there's the RF 600mm f/11 but f/11 seems way too dark for shooting in the shade even with the crop factor. I just want one solid prime that isnt a massive heavy zoom. What is actually the best prime for wildlife on this specific body?
I've been lugging gear through swamps for twenty years now and the R7 completely changed the game! I know you're worried about that f/11 aperture, but I took the Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM out to the wetlands last November and was totally blown away. I was tracking tiny warblers in deep shadows and the R7 just grabbed them!
- Portability is fantastic, you dont even need a tripod.
- Eye detection works beautifully even with that smaller aperture.
- Its way under your budget with room to spare. I used to carry a heavy EF setup but my back finally gave out lol. This lens lets me stay out all day and the image quality is crisp. The stabilization is amazing! Its kinda the best prime for this body if you want to keep things light!
