Which prime lens should I buy for my Canon EOS 90D?

Been looking at getting my first prime for my 90D and honestly I'm a bit stuck. I keep seeing everyone rave about the nifty fifty f/1.8 because it's so cheap but then I read that on a crop sensor it acts like an 80mm which sounds way too tight for just walking around. Then I saw the 24mm pancake lens which looks great for travel but I'm worried it won't give me that nice blurry background for portraits of my dog.

I'm heading to Chicago next month so I need to decide soon. Here is what I'm looking for:

  • Budget: $300 max
  • Use case: Street photography and some pet portraits
  • Size: Preferably something light since I'm walking a lot

Should I just go for the 35mm or is there something better I'm missing?
