So I finally got my hands on the R1 for this big track and field championship in Seattle next Friday and I am honestly a bit overwhelmed by the speed of this thing. Ive been shooting with the R3 and the 70-200mm f2.8 for a few years now so I thought I knew what to expect but this body is just on another level. The cross-type AF is insane but I am noticing some weird hunting when I am wide open at the long end and I am starting to think my current RF glass isnt quite hitting the refresh rate the body needs for that 40fps burst.
Ive got about 12k left in the gear budget for this quarter so I need to make a move fast before the event starts. I was looking at the 400mm prime but then I am worried about versatility for the closer lane shots. The problem is I need absolute clinical sharpness for these tight crops since the client wants high-res prints for the stadium walls. Ive been a Canon pro for 15 years and I have never felt like the camera was actually faster than the lens until now. Its kinda stressing me out because I need to get the order in by tonight to get it here in time.

It works well for track and the AF keeps up fine for me. I am happy I didnt drop the full 12k on a single prime when this does the job for way less.

I have used this setup for a few track meets now and the difference in AF motor response compared to the 70-200 is pretty noticeable. The 100-300 uses dual Nano USM motors that are specifically tuned to handle the high-frequency AF calculations the R1 pushes out. The hunting you are seeing at the long end of your current glass is usually because the internal focus groups just cant cycle fast enough between frames. Its a physical limitation of the older lens architecture. With the 100-300 you are getting prime-level sharpness which helps with those heavy crops for the stadium prints. It handles lateral movement across the lanes quite well without losing focus during high-speed tracking.
