sorry if this is a dumb question but im totally lost. i want to get into photography for my sisters wedding next month but i have no clue what to buy. looking for a bundle under 500 bucks.

  • needs to be easy for a beginner
  • portable for travel
  • battery life matters

Honestly, 500 bucks is a tight budget but you can totally snag something decent if you look for used gear. I started out with a Canon EOS Rebel T7 24.1MP DSLR and it honestly taught me everything I know. It is super simple to use, the menus are friendly, and the battery lasts forever. It fits in a backpack easy too. Another one I see on sale a lot is the Sony Alpha a6000 24.3MP Mirrorless.

  • The Sony is smaller than the Canon, which is great for travel.
  • Canon is a bit more durable feeling imo.
  • Both use standard glass that you can upgrade later. Just dont overthink it. You'll be happy with either one as long as you learn the basics before the wedding day. Just buy an extra battery and you are good to go.

To add to the point above: weddings are tricky because of low light, so whatever you pick, skip the cheap zoom lenses if you can. Since you need something portable and easy, here are two alternatives that wont break the bank.

  • Sony Alpha a6000 24.3MP Mirrorless is a classic for a reason. Its tiny, fast, and the autofocus is honestly way better than most entry-level stuff. You can find bundles used all day long under your limit.
  • Fujifilm X-T200 24.2MP Mirrorless is another solid choice. The colors are beautiful straight out of the camera, which saves you a ton of editing time. Focus on getting a prime lens later if you have some cash left over. You really dont need to overcomplicate things for a wedding. Just get a fast memory card like the SanDisk Extreme 64GB SDXC UHS-I and you'll be fine.

Found this thread while browsing and figured I would chime in. Buying for a wedding is a big task, so just be careful with budget glass. If you want something portable that isnt a chunky DSLR, you might want to consider the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III 16.1MP Micro Four Thirds. Its compact, has image stabilization, and is way easier to carry around all day. Before you commit, make sure you account for an extra battery, as mirrorless cameras drain fast. I would suggest picking up a spare Wasabi Power Olympus BLS-50 Battery so you dont get stuck mid-ceremony.

No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.
