Ugh I've been staring at tabs for three hours and I'm just getting more annoyed. Trying to snag a Sony a7 IV before my sisters wedding in Chicago next month and the bundles are so confusing.

  • Option A: The B&H kit with the 28-70mm lens for like $2698
  • Option B: Adorama's bundle that comes with the 64gb card and a bag
  • Option C: Just buying the body and hunting for a used 35mm prime on FB Marketplace

Budget is $2800 max and I cant go over. I'm leaning toward B because of the accessories but is that lens in Option A actually any good or just cheap glass? Idk if I should just wait for a better sale...

Been thinking about your post for a bit now. Wedding shoots are super stressful and honestly, those freebie bags in bundles are usually trash... I once had a strap snap on a free bundle bag while I was hiking and almost trashed my whole setup. Not worth the risk imo. Before you pull the trigger, are you comfortable using third-party lenses? That might be your best bet to stay under $2800 while getting quality glass. If you skip the kit, you could get the Sony Alpha 7 IV Full-frame Mirrorless Camera Body and pair it with the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 for Sony E. It is way faster for dim indoor lighting than the kit glass and keeps you safe for the ceremony. Also, make sure to get a solid card like the SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO UHS-II SDXC Memory Card so you dont risk a write failure during the vows. TL;DR: Most bundles hide cheap accessories to inflate the price; buy the body and a better third-party lens to stay safe and under budget.

Just catching up on the thread and I totally agree with the point about the kit lens glass quality! That Sony Alpha 7 IV Mirrorless Camera Body is an absolute beast but honestly that 28-70mm lens is gonna hold you back at a wedding. Youll need more light for those indoor Chicago venues! Since you are capped at a $2800 budget you should definitely skip Option A. The Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS is fine for day trips but it wont give you that pro look. I love the idea of going body-only and grabbing the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2. It fits your budget perfectly and that constant f/2.8 is absolutely amazing for receptions! Youll get way better bokeh than the kit lens ever could. TL;DR: Skip the kit lens. Buy the body solo and get a fast zoom or a Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 to stay under budget while getting fantastic shots.

Like someone mentioned, that kit lens is basically a paperweight for indoor weddings. You need that f/2.8 aperture or wider to handle low light without cranking your ISO to grainy levels. Honestly, in my experience, those adorama bundles just pad the price with generic stuff you will end up replacing in three months anyway. Its a trap for beginners tbh. If I were you, I would grab the Sony Alpha 7 IV Mirrorless Camera Body standalone and skip the kit entirely. You can usually find the body for around $2498. That leaves you about $300 which is tight, but if you can stretch just a tiny bit, look for a used Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2. It is a massive step up in sharpness and that constant aperture makes life way easier when you are zooming during a ceremony and dont want your exposure jumping around. Also, dont skimp on the media. A wedding is high stakes and you need a reliable card like the Lexar Professional 1667x 128GB SDXC UHS-II to keep up with the buffer. Buying a used prime lens like you mentioned in Option C is actually a really smart play to stay under that $2800 cap while still getting pro-level results.
