So my sisters wedding is literally in three weeks and I told her I would help with the photos because she is on a super tight budget and cant afford a pro. I know I should have planned this better but my phone camera is basically garbage now after I dropped it last month and the lens is all scratched up. Everyone keeps saying I should get a mirrorless camera because they are better than those big bulky black ones with the mirrors inside but honestly I am so confused looking at all these specs and numbers. I went to look at some at the store and they are like a thousand dollars just for the body part which is insane??

I only have about 550 or maybe 600 bucks tops if I skip some meals lol. I really need to find a good deal fast because I need time to learn how to even turn it on before the big day on the 24th. Im in the Chicago area if that helps but I dont mind ordering online if it ships fast. Is there like a specific site that has huge sales or like a used place that wont rip me off? Sorry if this is a really basic question but I have no idea what I am doing and I am starting to panic a little bit. Where do you guys go to find the actual best discounts on these things?

Listen, three weeks is cutting it super close but dont freak out just yet. Over the years, I have bought almost all my gear used because buying new is basically throwing money away if you are on a budget. Since you are in Chicago, you could check out local shops downtown, but for a guaranteed deal and fast shipping, I always go to sites like MPB or KEH. They test everything and give a warranty, so you wont get ripped off like you might on FB Marketplace. For a $600 limit, you need a body and a kit lens bundled together. Here are a few I have used that punch way above their weight:

  • Sony Alpha a6000 24.3MP with 16-50mm Lens
  • This is the classic beginner mirrorless. Its fast and easy to find used for around $450.
  • Canon EOS M50 Mark II 24.1MP with 15-45mm Lens
  • Super user friendly menu. In my experience, Canon colors are way better for weddings and skin tones.
  • Fujifilm X-T200 24.2MP with 15-45mm Lens
  • Great if you want that cool retro look and really nice colors without needing to edit much. Stay away from the big box stores if you want to save cash. Check the Used section on B&H Photo or Adorama too. They usually have super fast shipping to Chicago. Just make sure whatever you buy specifically says it includes the lens or you will just be staring at a hole in the camera body on the big day. Good luck with the wedding, you got this... just practice like crazy the second the box arrives!
