Hello everyone, I recently got a Fujifilm X-T5 and I'm loving its retro design and excellent image quality. However, as a photography newbie, I'm unsure which lenses to get for this camera. I'm mainly interested in landscape and portrait photography. Could anyone recommend some lenses for me? Thanks in advance!

In my opinion, the best prime lens for the Fujifilm X-T5 is Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 R, which is great lens for portraits and low-light photography with low exceptional sharpness and beautiful bokeh.

The best zoom lens is Fujifilm XF 16-55mm F2.8, which is weather-sealed, making it robust for various shooting conditions, and the focal length range is ideal for landscapes, portraits, and everyday photography.

Anyone tried some Sigma lenses for Fujifilm? Such as Sigma 16mm f/1.4, 30mm f/1.4 ?

@waterme Sigma X-mount lenses are great, and cheaper than Fuji ones. Many people choose Sigma lenses.

For a prime lens, a great choice is the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 R. This lens offers a classic focal length equivalent to 53mm in full-frame terms, providing a versatile option for portraits and street photography with excellent low-light performance due to its wide aperture.

For a zoom lens,  Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR is an excellent option. This lens covers a broad range from wide-angle to standard focal length, making it well-suited for landscapes, events, and everyday photography. Its constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range ensures good performance in various lighting conditions.

For Fujifilm X-T5, two of the best-selling zoom lenses that are highly regarded for their performance and versatility are:

  1. Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR: This lens is known for its constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range, which provides excellent low-light performance and depth of field control. With a focal length equivalent to 24-82.5mm (in 35mm terms), it's versatile for various photography styles, including landscapes, portraits, and event photography. The lens is also weather-sealed, making it suitable for outdoor shooting in different conditions.

  2. Fujifilm XF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR: This zoom lens offers an impressive focal range equivalent to 27-202.5mm, making it a great all-around lens for travel and everyday photography. The built-in optical image stabilization (OIS) helps to reduce camera shake, particularly useful for handheld shooting at longer focal lengths. Like the 16-55mm, this lens is also weather-sealed, enhancing its durability.

If I had to recommend only one best lens for Fujifilm X-T5, it would be Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR. This fast prime lens offers a versatile focal length equivalent to 35mm on full-frame cameras, making it great for street photography, portraits, and everyday shooting. It's compact, weather-sealed, and delivers excellent sharpness and image quality, making it a fantastic all-around choice for Fujifilm X-T5.

I actually upgraded to the X-T5 recently and, honestly, I was kinda disappointed with how some of my older lenses performed. That 40-megapixel sensor is really demanding, and my old Fujinon XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS just didnt look as sharp as I expected anymore. It was a bit of a letdown after hearing so much hype about that sensor. I ended up switching to the Fujinon XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR and the difference is basically night and day because it is actually built for these newer high-res bodies. For your portraits, everyone always suggests the 56mm, but i found the original version to be a bit slow to focus on the X-T5 which was frustrating. If you can, definitely check out the Fujinon XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR. It gives this incredible compression for portraits that shorter lenses just cant match, and its much faster for tracking people. For landscapes, i tried some cheaper wide angles but they had bad corner softness... eventually bit the bullet on the Fujinon XF 14mm f/2.8 R. Its older tech but surprisingly holds up way better than the zooms ive tried. Just something to keep in mind, dont settle for soft glass if you want to see what that sensor can actually do. Ask away if youre curious about how they handle in the rain or whatever.

Like someone mentioned, those third-party options are popular, but unfortunately i had issues with the weather sealing and autofocus consistency not being quite as good as expected. For a beginner, you really want gear that is reliable so you dont worry about your camera getting damaged. The X-T5 has a 40MP sensor which is technically very demanding. I found that many older lenses just didnt have the resolving power to stay sharp at that resolution, which was honestly a bit disappointing after spending so much on the body. To ensure you are getting the best results and keeping the kit safe, i would look at these instead:

  • Fujifilm XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR for portraits because it is part of the new generation designed specifically for 40MP sensors.
  • Fujifilm XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 R LM OIS WR for landscape work where you need more reach than a standard zoom. Technically, you need to look for the LM and WR designations. The Linear Motor (LM) is much faster and more accurate for the X-T5 autofocus system. Without it, the camera tends to hunt more, which can be frustrating. Stick to the newer native glass to make sure the weather sealing is actually trustworthy in the rain... it is better to be safe than sorry with such an expensive camera.

100% agree

For landscape photography with the Fujifilm X-T5, the best lens option would be the Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR. This versatile zoom lens offers a great focal range from wide-angle to short telephoto, making it suitable for capturing expansive vistas as well as zooming in on distant details. Its maximum aperture of f/4 is decent for landscape work, and the lens is also weather-sealed and has optical image stabilization.

For portrait photography, the Fujinon XF 56mm f/1.2 R is an excellent choice. This fast prime lens with its bright f/1.2 aperture allows you to achieve beautiful shallow depth of field and subject separation. The 85mm full-frame equivalent focal length is ideal for flattering portrait perspectives. The fast aperture also helps with low-light shooting. This lens is tack sharp and renders beautiful bokeh.

If you want a more budget-friendly portrait option, the Fujinon XF 35mm f/2 R WR is a great alternative. At around 53mm full-frame equivalent, it provides a slightly wider field of view suitable for environmental portraits. Its f/2 aperture is decent for subject isolation and the lens is compact, weather-resistant and very affordable.

Regarding what #22 said about "Like someone mentioned, those third-party options are popular,..."

  • I definitely agree. Ive been really happy with how the latest third-party glass handles the 40MP sensor. I was actually quite skeptical about the resolving power and autofocus speed at first, but after deep diving into the MTF charts on OpticalLimits, I was pleasantly surprised.
  • Look at the lens database on the Fuji Fan Boys website for full-size samples
  • Keep an eye on firmware updates via the manufacturer tools
  • Browse used markets like MPB to stretch your budget further Everything works well and honestly, I dont have any complaints. Its a great way to build a high-end kit without the massive price tag.

I'm mainly interested in landscape and portrait photography.

For landscape and portrait, I highly recommend the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN and 30mm f/1.4 DC DN lenses.
