Just picked up an X-T5 and I am totally lost on glass. Ive been reading forums non-stop and the 18-55mm kit lens is always touted as a solid starter, but then people keep pushing the 16-55mm f/2.8 for the image quality. Honestly, the 16-55 is just so huge for my style of street photography in London. I need something versatile for travel and candid portraits.

  • Budget: around 800-1000 pounds max
  • Size: needs to be relatively compact
  • Use case: travel and street

Im worried about losing sharpness if I go too small, but I dont want to lug a brick around. Any suggestions for a middle ground?

If you're looking for the best all-around lens for the Fujifilm X-T5, my top recommendation would be the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II. It's an excellent everyday zoom that takes full advantage of the X-T5's 40MP sensor.

The 16-55mm focal range (24-84mm equivalent) covers landscapes, street photography, travel, portraits, and everyday shooting. The constant f/2.8 aperture performs well in low light and produces beautiful background blur. The newer version is significantly lighter than its predecessor, offers excellent sharpness, fast autofocus, and weather resistance. Its biggest downside is the relatively high price.

For a more affordable alternative, I'd recommend the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary. It's incredibly compact, weighs just 285g, and delivers impressive image quality. It's particularly suitable for travel and casual photography.

Another excellent option is the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR. Its extended zoom range makes it ideal for vacations and outdoor photography, although the f/4 aperture is less versatile in low light.

My recommendation: Choose the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 II if image quality is your priority. For the best balance of price, portability, and performance, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 is hard to beat.

Been thinking about your dilemma all afternoon. Ive tested almost every focal length on the X-mount over the years, and honestly, the sheer resolving power of the 40mp sensor on your X-T5 makes glass selection tricky. If you want that prime-level sharpness without the bulk of the f/2.8 constant zooms, I found the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR to be a fascinating middle ground for travel, though it might be a bit soft at the edges for some. Personally, I keep going back to the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 R for street work. It is physically tiny, and the rendering has this character that modern clinical lenses just cant touch. You wont find a zoom that hits that sweet spot of weight and image quality, so maybe stop chasing the perfect zoom and try a prime.

Honestly, have you considered the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS? Over the years, I've found it's plenty sharp for street work while being small enough to actually carry around.

Had a moment to think about this more while out walking. I used to be obsessed with having the sharpest possible glass, but I learned the hard way that weight ruins the experience. I once bought this massive, expensive zoom thinking it would be the holy grail for travel, but I ended up leaving it in the hotel safe half the time because my neck was killing me. I eventually settled on a smaller, more modest setup that just works reliably every single time. My current experience:

  • Prioritize how the lens balances on your body so it doesnt tip over while you're walking.
  • Weather sealing is a huge plus if you are shooting in London, honestly.
  • Don't sweat the sharpness charts too much because you'll be way happier with photos you actually take because you had the camera with you.

Coming back to this thread after checking some lab charts on the 40mp sensor data and honestly you gotta be super careful about micro-jitters with high-res bodies. Everyone obsesses over sharpness but stabilization is actually wild on some of these newer setups. Reminds me of when I was shooting motorsports back in 2018 with an ancient rig and my tripod literally blew over into a muddy ditch right before the main race started because I cheaped out on the legs. Total disaster gear-wise, ruined my favorite jacket too. Anyway watch out for shutter shock on the ultra-sharp lenses.

Congrats on the new camera. Honestly, if you hate the size of that big zoom, just skip it. I think a lot of people get caught up in specs and forget that carrying a heavy lens means you might just leave it at home. I have been using a smaller prime lately and honestly, the portability is just game changing for street stuff in the city. Not sure if you considered checking out the f/2 primes, but they are super sharp and tiny. I really enjoy using them for travel since they dont attract much attention. Someone told me the newer zooms are getting better, but I really prefer having something that fits in a coat pocket. You wont regret going smaller, the quality on these newer sensors is honestly good enough that you wont even miss the extra glass weight.
