What is the best all-around lens for Fujifilm X-T5?

Just picked up the X-T5 and I am honestly blown away by the sensor. Coming from a decade of shooting full frame, the jump to 40MP on this crop sensor is wild but I am hitting a wall with glass selection. I do a mix of street photography around Chicago and the occasional portrait session for friends, so I need something versatile. Ive been eyeing the 16-55mm f/2.8 because that range is basically my bread and butter, but man that thing is a brick. It kinda defeats the purpose of the smaller body right?

So I was thinking maybe the 18-55mm kit lens is enough since its so compact but does it actually hold up to the 40MP resolution? I dont wanna waste the potential of this sensor on soft glass. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and get the 23mm or 33mm f/1.4 primes instead, but swapping lenses when I am out and about in the cold is a total pain. If I have about 1200 bucks to spend and need this set before a trip in late April, what is the best all-around lens that keeps the balance of the camera while still giving me that crisp sharpness I am looking for?

Honestly, if you want that 40MP sharpness without the bulk, look at the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR. Yeah it is a brick, but optics dont lie. Check out the MTF charts on the Lenstip website before you drop the cash. If that is too much weight, the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS is a budget hero, just dont expect corner perfection. Keep an eye on the used market, you can find deals around 800 bucks.

Had a moment to think about your dilemma. If you want to maximize that 40MP sensor without the bulk, the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR is decent for travel, though corners can get a bit soft. Honestly, are you prioritizing weight over that f/2.8 aperture for low light? You might prefer the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS for its size, but it really pushes the sensor limits. How much do you value weather sealing vs sharpness?

Congrats on the new gear. I used to lug around a massive bag of primes, but honestly, you might want to consider just grabbing a versatile zoom from Fujifilm instead of stressing over every single pixel.

  • Look for a compact constant aperture zoom
  • Prioritize weather sealing I swapped to a lightweight zoom during a freezing winter shoot once and never looked back. Just keep it simple so you can actually enjoy your trip.

@Reply #5 - good point! Honestly, I am in the exact same boat with my X-T5. I went through weeks of internal debate comparing weight versus sharpness, and it is a total headache. I remember taking a heavy piece of glass out for a long weekend in the mountains, thinking I needed it for the resolution, but I ended up with a sore neck and barely used it because it was just too cumbersome. My biggest advice is to be careful not to fall into the pixel-peeping trap. It is so easy to obsess over those 40MP charts, but you dont want to end up with a lens that is technically perfect yet stays in your bag because it is a nightmare to lug around. I ended up trying to modify my own strap attachments to balance the weight better, but sometimes you just learn the hard way that less is more. Just dont sacrifice your actual shooting experience for a number on a graph.

Honestly, don't overthink the 40MP thing too much. I get the obsession with sharpness, but unless you're printing huge posters, you won't notice the difference. I'd skip the heavy zoom if you hate the weight. Just grab a fast prime that feels good on the body. It makes the camera way more fun to carry around all day, which means you'll actually use it more. That matters way more than theoretical resolution charts.
