What is the best all-around lens for the Fujifilm X-T5?

I just upgraded to the Fuji X-T5 for a big trip to Japan next month and I am honestly tearing my hair out trying to pick one single lens to bring. My budget is capped at around $900 because the camera body already cleaned me out. I need something that can handle everything from street shots in Tokyo at night to landscape stuff in Kyoto.

I spent the last three days reading forums and I'm just more confused now. Everyone says the 18-55mm kit lens is the classic choice but then half the people say it cant handle the new 40 megapixel sensor and looks soft. So then I looked at the 16-80mm f4 because of the extra range but apparently that one has bad corner sharpness and is super bulky. I also saw the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 which is cheap and light but it doesnt have an aperture ring and using the command dials on a Fuji just feels wrong to me.

I just want one solid, sharp walkaround lens that makes the most of this expensive sensor without breaking the bank or my back. What is the actual best all-around lens for this body if you had to choose just one?

I went through this exact same dilemma when upgrading to the 40 megapixel sensor! You want to maximize that amazing resolution without carrying a brick or going broke. Honestly, your best bet is looking at the used market to grab a high-end lens, or buying the newer kit option. Here are the two absolute best ways to spend that $900 budget:

  • Get a used Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f2.8 R LM WR. You can easily find these in excellent condition on MPB or KEH for around $750. It is a bit heavy, but the optical quality is absolutely stellar on the X-T5 sensor! I love the constant f2.8 for night shots in Tokyo.
  • Buy the brand new Fujifilm XF 16-50mm f2.8-4.8 R LM WR. This is the new kit lens designed specifically to resolve the 40MP sensor. It is super light, weather-resistant, has the aperture ring you want, and only costs $699 new! If you want to travel light, that new 16-50mm is a fantastic compromise. But if you want ultimate sharpness and dont mind a bit of weight, go used for the 16-55mm f2.8. You save a ton of cash buying used and get pro-grade glass!
