What is the best all-around lens for the Fujifilm X-T5?

I've looked at the 18-55mm versus the 16-80mm but people say the 18-55 cant handle the 40mp sensor. I'm going to Tokyo next month with an $800 budget. Is the extra range worth the extra weight and slower aperture for a travel setup?

> What is the best all-around lens for the Fujifilm X-T5? Honestly, be careful with the 18-55 on that 40mp sensor. It might look a bit soft if you crop in much. I would suggest the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR for a trip to Tokyo. The extra reach and weather sealing are definitely worth the weight, just make sure you can handle that slower f/4 aperture in low light.

I spent two weeks in Tokyo a few years back and honestly weight matters way more than people think when youre walking 20k steps a day. I started with a bulky zoom and my back regretted it by day three. Regarding that 40mp sensor, its true some older glass struggles to resolve every pixel wide open, but you can usually stop down to f/5.6 or f/8 to sharpen things up for landscapes. If you want the best balance of size and image quality within that $800 budget:

No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.

Stumbled upon this discussion and figured id weigh in. If you want to resolve that 40mp sensor properly, the older 18-55 tends to struggle. The Fujifilm XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR was designed specifically for these high-res bodies. Its an internal zoom lens, so the balance doesnt shift when you're shooting. If you want more reach and a faster aperture, look at the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD. Its definitely heavier than the Fuji kits but offers more versatility for that budget.

  • 16-50mm: lightweight, weather sealed, optimized for 40mp sensor.
  • 17-70mm: constant f/2.8 aperture, built-in stabilization, better for low light. Both of these should fit your $800 budget. The Tamron is a solid choice for night street photography in Tokyo, while the 16-50 is better if you're walking all day and want to keep the kit light. They both handle the sensor better than the 16-80 in my experience...

I spent a ton of time debating this before my last big trip! Honestly, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X is absolutely fantastic for the price. I took it on a week-long shoot and the constant f2.8 is a total game changer for night street photography in places like Shinjuku! It is incredibly compact and lightweight, which makes it the perfect travel companion for hitting 20k steps. It handles that 40mp sensor surprisingly well too. If you need more reach, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD for Fujifilm X is another amazing option with built-in stabilization, tho its a bit heavier. Both lenses are super sharp and fit right in your $800 budget. You should definitely prioritize that faster aperture if you plan on shooting after dark in Tokyo... you wont regret having the extra light for those neon signs.
