What is the best all-rounder zoom lens for the Fujifilm X-H2S that can actually keep up with its autofocus speed?
I have been shooting Fuji for years, mostly using primes like the 33mm f1.4 on my old X-T3, but I just upgraded to the X-H2S because I got hired for a documentary gig in Costa Rica next month. I need a solid walk-around zoom because swapping lenses in the humid rainforest is just asking for sensor dust.
Im torn because I need something that handles both fast action and run-and-gun video. The 16-55mm f2.8 red badge is the obvious choice for image quality, but the lack of OIS is making me nervous, even with the H2S IBIS. Ive heard mixed reports about micro-jitter when shooting handheld video on that setup. Is the newer 18-120mm f4 PZ a better bet for video, or is that f4 aperture going to kill me under the dark forest canopy? My budget is capped at 1300 dollars and I need to buy something by next weekend so I have time to test it. What are you guys using on this body?
I use the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f2.8 R LM WR on my X-H2S and honestly, I couldn't be happier with the setup. I had the exact same worries about the lack of OIS, but the IBIS on the H2S works incredibly well. I have no complaints about micro-jitter anymore, especially after the recent body firmware updates. Here is why it works so well for Costa Rica:
- The linear motors are blazing fast and keep up with the subject tracking perfectly.
- You will absolutely need that f2.8 aperture under the dark jungle canopy.
- The weather sealing is rock solid and has handled tons of humidity for me without fogging up. If you really need extra stability for run-and-gun video, just turn on the digital IS boost in-camera. It crops a tiny bit but completely locks down the frame. The 18-120mm f4 is nice for the power zoom, but f4 will force your ISO way too high in the deep woods.
