I just picked up an X-T30 II because I want to take nice shots of my wife during our trip to Rome next month but im honestly so stressed about picking a lens. I looked at the Fuji 50mm f2 and it seems great but its kinda pushing my $350 budget and then I saw the cheap XC 35mm f2 which is way cheaper but people on Reddit keep saying it wont give me that really blurry background look I want... like the bokeh isnt creamy enough? I dont know much about glass yet and im worried I'll buy the wrong thing and waste my money before we leave. What is actually the best budget portrait lens for this camera that wont break the bank but still looks professional?
Caught this thread a bit late but unfortunately i had a pretty bad experience trying to save money on those XC lenses. The Fujifilm Fujinon XC 35mm f2 is okay for street shots, but for portraits? It was honestly a letdown. The bokeh is kinda nervous and not creamy at all. If you want that pro look in Rome, 35mm is just too wide... you wont get that background separation youre dreaming of. I eventually gave up on the cheap Fuji stuff and tried these instead:
- Viltrox AF 56mm f1.4 XF which is usually under $300 and way faster.
- Sigma 56mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X which is super sharp if you find a deal. Tbh, dont get stuck on the brand name. That Viltrox 56mm is the way to go for your budget. The f1.4 aperture and longer focal length makes a massive difference compared to those f2 lenses you were looking at.
@Reply #3 - good point! Weight is huge when you're walking miles in Rome. In my experience, heavy setups can really ruin the mood. Check out the Sigma 56mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X. Over the years, its been my most reliable portrait lens for travel.

- super lightweight Sigmas build quality is legit so you dont have to worry about it breaking mid-trip.
Like someone mentioned, that 35mm just isn't gonna give you the bokeh you want. Before you commit to a purchase tho, are you open to buying used gear or does it have to be brand new for the trip? Be careful with expensive glass that weighs you down. I'd suggest looking at the TTArtisan 56mm f1.8 AF for a solid budget option. It saves you plenty of cash for the actual vacation.

I totally agree with those reddit comments about the wider focal lengths tho. If you want that professional look where your wife really pops from the background, you've gotta look at the physics behind the glass. A 35mm lens is basically a 'normal' field of view on your APS-C sensor, which is fantastic for general travel but it just doesnt provide the same subject isolation as something longer. To get those creamy backgrounds you're dreaming of for your Rome trip, you really need to be looking at something in the 50mm to 56mm range. That gives you an effective focal length of around 75mm to 85mm in full-frame terms, which is the absolute sweet spot for portraits! It’s all about the optical compression. When you use a longer focal length, it physically narrows the angle of view and makes the background blur look much more substantial than a wider lens ever could, even at the same f-stop. I’ve spent years obsessing over MTF charts and bokeh rendering patterns, and trust me, that extra reach makes a massive difference for portraits. You dont necessarily need to blow your whole budget, but you definitely want a prime with a wide maximum aperture like f/1.8 or f/2. It’s gonna make those Roman streets look like a dream!
