What is the absolute best budget prime lens I can get for my new Fujifilm X-T5 that wont break the bank? Okay so here is my situation and im kinda panicking because I have this amazing camera but literally no way to take photos yet. My uncle gifted me his X-T5 last week which is insane I know but it didnt come with a lens and I am completely broke after buying a memory card and a bag. I have a trip to Japan in exactly two weeks and I really want to take those cool street photos with the blurry backgrounds but I only have about $200 or maybe $250 max to spend on a lens.

I am a total beginner and honestly have no idea what I am doing or what all these numbers mean. Someone told me to get a prime lens because they are cheap and good for low light but when I search online I see XF and XC and then brands like TTArtisan and Meike and Viltrox and my head is spinning. Do I need autofocus? I think I do because I dont know how to manual focus fast enough for street photography. I dont want to miss shots of people walking by because I was fiddling with the ring.

Is there something decent I can get for under $250 that will actually work well on this camera? I read somewhere that the X-T5 has a lot of megapixels (40 megapixels I think?) and that cheap lenses might look really bad on it but is it really that noticeable for a beginner who just wants to post on Instagram? I just want something small and easy to walk around with. Please help me out I need to order something by this weekend so it arrives before my flight...

Unfortunately, most cheap manual lenses perform terribly on that 40MP sensor. I had issues with image quality and missed focus constantly. For your budget, you should look at these instead:

Just saw this and you are going to have an amazing time in Japan! That X-T5 sensor is a beast but you can absolutely feed it on a budget. Dont stress about the 40MP resolving power too much for Instagram. To get those gorgeous blurry backgrounds and fast autofocus, here are my top budget recommendations:

  • Viltrox AF 33mm f1.4 XF
  • This lens is fantastic! The f/1.4 aperture lets in tons of light for night street shots in Tokyo, and the autofocus is snappy. You can find it right around $250.
  • TTArtisan AF 35mm f1.8 X
  • Incredible value at around $150. It is super lightweight, sharp, and leaves you with extra cash for your trip. Quick tip: Make sure to update the lens firmware via USB as soon as you get it to ensure the best autofocus performance on the newer X-T5 body!

In my experience, trying to learn manual focus on a fast-paced trip to Japan is a recipe for frustration, especially with the demanding 40-megapixel sensor on the X-T5. You definitely need reliable autofocus to get those street shots. Over the years, I have tested several budget lenses and found a couple of safe, reliable options that fit your budget and wont compromise your camera. Here are two solid autofocus options to consider:

  • Viltrox AF 33mm f1.4 XF
  • This offers a very fast f1.4 aperture, which is incredible for blurry backgrounds and night photography. It usually runs slightly over budget new, but you can easily grab a used one for under $250.
  • TTArtisan AF 35mm f1.8 XF
  • A very compact option that costs around $150 brand new. The autofocus is quick enough for street walkarounds, and the image quality holds up fine for Instagram. I highly recommend sticking to these autofocus lenses to ensure you dont miss any memories on your trip.
